Car Accident Fracture Injuries

If you have been injured in a car crash, you may be facing a number of stressful issues. In addition to recovering from your injury in rehab — which can often be quite painful and uncomfortable — many car accident victims also end up being unable to work during that time. This could leave you facing a doubled financial burden consisting of additional medical expenses and no income. For this reason, you might consider contacting a lawyer, like a car accident attorney Des Moines IA trusts, and filing a civil suit against the liable driver. Fracture injuries are some of the more common injuries that claimants have in car accident cases.

Fractured Bones

People who have never had a fractured bone might think that these are fairly easy to heal with a cast, but if you’ve ever suffered a bone fracture before, you probably know that this is not always the case.

There are three different categories of fractures that car accident victims often face. A nondisplaced fracture occurs when the bone fractures but stays in contact. Typically, these types of fractures do not require surgery and heal on their own. A displaced fracture is when the bones suffer instability, a big shift, or another kind of alignment problem. Surgery is usually needed for this type of fracture. The third type, which is not as common as the other two in car accidents, is referred to as a stress fracture. This is caused by repeated pressure to the bone. A car accident could easily worsen a stress fracture that is developing or exacerbate a stress fracture that is still healing.

Fracture Complications

There are several serious types of complications that can occur with fractures. These complications can sometimes result in long-term injuries or permanent disabilities.

  • Bone marrow infections
  • Damage to tissues, nerves, or skin that is around the fracture
  • Damage veins and arteries from the fracture
  • Failure to heal correctly causes mobility issues
  • Formation of an embolism (blood clot)
  • Organ damage from the bone protruding or puncturing
  • Sepsis
  • The bone does not heal correctly
  • Victim goes into shock

Fractures can take up to eight weeks to heal, and even longer if there are complications during that time. Once a bone has healed, the individual typically goes to physical therapy in order to strengthen the injured area, adding more time to the recovery period.
